Johnston I, had a studio in Chicago in the early 1920s where he trained 10 other photographers to go around and photograph mainly parties and functions. He was able to retire at an early age of 34. Sam’s grandfather, Samuel W. Johnston II, and grandmother, Lucy Johnston, put themselves through dental school by photographing portraits with grandmother photo oiling them. They sold an 8×10 back during the depression for .38 cents and made enough money not only to complete their schooling but also buy the sister ship to the Presidential Yatch while going to school in Baltimore. Lauderdale, all the while stopping along the way, photographing and doing their dental practice that by the time they made it to Fl. Lauderdale they saved enough money to buy their home on River Land Rd. Sam’s father and mother started their carriers in photography doing pretty much the same thing, Samuel W. Johnston III photographed portraits and Carolyn Johnston would portrait oil them to support Sam III in med school at the University of Florida. Upon reaching graduation Sam III decided he liked photography better than becoming a doctor, thus started Johnston Photography back in 1964 where it still is in Gainesville with Sam’s brother, David D.
